GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) - The owner of a Long Island titanium factory faces sentencing in federal court after admitting he stored more than 12 tons of corrosive hazardous waste on his property.
A prosecutor compared the mess to a horror movie scene. Investigators found dozens of drums oozing green liquid, and trash littering the 125-acre site in Port Jefferson Station.
Gerald Cohen, who's 74, pleaded guilty last year to violating the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. He faces a possible 5-year prison sentence and millions in fines when he appears Friday afternoon in federal court in Central Islip.
Opened in 1959, the plant made titanium sheets used primarily for the aeronautics industry.
Cohen's lawyer, Anthony LaPinta, declined to comment before the sentencing.
