NY tax crackdown targets jewelers

Associated Press - June 2, 2009 9:05 AM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - New York law enforcers are cracking down on jewelry stores that offer cash discounts to avoid sales tax.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes said Tuesday three stores and their presidents have been indicted for tax violations. It's part of an ongoing investigation that resulted in three convictions last year.

The prosecutor estimates the stores tried to hide more than $10 million in taxable sales.

The DA's office and state tax department used undercover detectives posing as customers.

Investigators nicknamed the sting "Operation Bracelet."
