ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State officials are warning consumers not to drink "unpasteurized" raw milk from a dairy in upstate New York because of possible Listeria contamination.
Breese Hollow Dairy in Hoosick Falls has a state permit to legally sell raw milk at the farm. Samples are taken monthly and tested by the agriculture department to determine if the milk is free of bacteria.
A routine sample taken last month was discovered to be contaminated with Listeria bacteria. The dairy is prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of pathogens.
Listeria-contaminated products could cause Listeriosis, which typically causes mild, flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals. Pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems are at risk for more serious complications.
