Man pleads guilty to taking bear out of season at campsite

Associated Press - July 31, 2009 3:15 AM ET

PIERCEFIELD, N.Y. (AP) - A 29-year-old Tupper Lake man admits killing a black bear out of season while he was camping at an Adirondack lake.

Benny Haywood was arrested in May for killing a bear at Horseshoe Lake in Piercefield, 115 miles northwest of Albany. He pleaded guilty in town court last week and was sentenced to time served.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation said the bear was found skinned and butchered and dumped at another location. The DEC says Haywood was on parole for a felony driving-while-intoxicated conviction at the time and wasn't allowed to possess a gun.

At the time of his arrest, Haywood's mother told WNBZ radio that her son shot the bear because it had approached a group of children at the campsite.
