CHESTERTOWN -- Flags are flying at half-staff across New York State Wednesday for a local soldier who gave his life serving in Afghanistan.

Private First Class Jeremiah Monroe was killed in action last week. He was a native of Brant Lake in Warren County.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held this Saturday in Chestertown. Calling hours will be held on Friday at the Barton-McDermott Funeral Home in Chestertown.

Monroe leaves behind a daughter.

We're told he just joined the Army in 2008, enlisting as a combat engineer.

He was 31-years-old.
