Widespread illness closes Schoharie child care locations

SCHOHARIE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Four Schoharie County child care locations are closed for the rest of the week due to widespread illness.

NEWS10 has learned that 80% of all students at the four facilities--Lark Street Child Care, Cobleskill Head Start, Blenheim Head Start, and Schoharie Head Start--are home sick.

Dozens of faculty members are out, as well.

Lark Street Child Care, the location with the highest enrollment, is said to be the facility hit hardest by the absences.

Authorities say there is at least one confirmed case of H1N1 among the sick, with dozens of others experiencing flu-like symptoms.

As a result, the facilities are scrubbing and sanitizing everything in their buildings to eliminate the potential for any further outbreaks.

"We're scrubbing every hard surface, every toy," said Lisa Voss of the Schoharie County Child Development Council. "We're disinfecting doorknobs, keyboards, computers - everything."

Fellow council member Judith McLaughlin told NEWS10, "We just want everyone to stay home, get better and hopefully the building will be clear (and) all the buildings will be clean enough to have them come back."

All four facilities will reopen on Monday, November 9th.

The locations care for children as young as six-weeks-old up to the age of twelve.

Parents who wish to know more about the closures can visit the Schoharie County Child Development Council's website.
