HUDSON FALLS, N.Y. -- Police in Warren and Washington counties tonight are trying to hunt down a group of people they say stole ATVs and dirt bikes from local businesses. They say companies in Fort Ann, Lake George, Hudson Falls, and Queensbury were all targeted. In total, nearly $40,000 worth of sports equipment was taken.
News 10's Marie Luby explains what the business owners are doing in hopes of catching the burglars.
A neighbor reported seeing people moving around crates and loading things into a trailer outside Progressive Motorsports in Hudson Falls. Turns out, it was one of four places the burglars hit just in the last week.
Someone's 'gone wheelin' with a red ATV stolen from the Pilot Knob Marina in Lake George. Co-owner Nick Barber believes a group of people is responsible. "Just from the time that they had versus the units they took, one or two people couldn't do that," says Barber.
The burglars also made off with motorcyles, dirt bikes, and riding gear from the other shops. Paul Wells says someone cut through the padlocks at his Go Slo store in Fort Anne, just like they did at Pilot Knob Marina.
Wells says their wish list was specific. "They had a chance at some better stuff at my place. There were Harleys there that they walked past and they took dirt bikes instead."
If the thieves are out to sell the goods for cash, Barber says they may be in for a rougher ride than they think. "If someone stole them to ride them around behind their house, that's one thing, but to go and license or register or sell them, quite difficult," Barber explains.
The business owners are offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
"Oh, we're gonna find them. Somebody's gonna talk," says Wells.
A fifth business owner is even pitching in some of his money for that reward. He says he was robbed two years ago. The victims hope neighbors will notice someone running around with a bunch of new sports equipment, and call it in.
