COLONIE, N.Y. -- Six people have been busted for prostitution at area massage parlors and Albany County investigators say the arrests are linked to nearly a dozen other alleged rings across the northeast.
“It's Chinese organized crime and they're running these girls all over the states and making a lot of money,” said Inspector John Burke of the Albany County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say two of the accused, 63-year-old Chi You Cheng and his daughter Kuen Lin Chang, ran Jasmine Beauty and Massage on Central Avenue.
Investigators believe three other women arrested at Jasmine moved up to the Capital Region about three months ago, and are here illegally.
Burke says they may have been working at the parlor to pay off debts.
“Sometimes (smugglers) charge them $5,000 to $10,000 to get in here illegally,” he said.
Three months ago is also around the time investigators started getting tips about a whole lot more than just massages going on behind Jasmine’s doors. In response, undercover deputies went in pretending to be clients. They made the arrests after the employees requested money to engage in sexual acts.
“They were doing eight to ten, twelve guys a day,” Burke added. “That's one girl, times three.”
Albany County investigators say the women were charging $65 for massages, and then offering sexual favors for an additional $40 to $60.
“At Jasmine they brought girls in and they slept in the basement,” said Inspector Burke said. “Most of the girls come from New York City and they come in and work in Albany for a couple of months and they go back to wherever.”
Rita DiMura owns Metamorphose Salon, right next door to Jasmine.
“We knew something was going on,” she told NEWS10.
DiMura adds she never saw a woman walk into Jasmine, just men of all ages.
“It would be creepy for us to leave at night,” she said, “so we would all leave together--me and the girls--when we would close up.”
Cops say the Jasmine operation kept careful logs of the johns, who together paid hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Police also arrested a sixth woman, Zhu Lu, for offering sexual services at Tao Beauty Salon on Old Loudon Road in Latham. Tao's owners say they were not aware of what she was allegedly doing.
All the suspects still need to be proscuted, but the illegals could be deported if convicted.
