ALBANY, N.Y. -- International students studying at the University at Albany get their first taste of the thanksgiving tradition, with all the trimmings!
More than 100 students took part in a Thanksgiving dinner at the University of Albany, and for many, it is adding to their experience in America.
"It's great to experience a new tradition," says Damir Bikmukhametov, a graduate student studying Epidemiology at UAlbany. "I've heard a lot about Thanksgiving, and I was looking forward to participating and the celebration."
Like many other students, Bikmukhametov says he has a lot to be thankful for.
"I'm proud to be studying here," says Bikmukhametov. "I really am thankful to my destiny that I am finally here."
"I'm thankful for all the friends from Albany, and the welcome from America," adds Min Su, a graduate student from China.
Students got a firsthand look at a holiday many had never experienced before, but it's a tradition the University has been carrying out for years.
"It gives them a place to come together and have a meal together and learn something about thanksgiving and the United States," says Margaret Reich, the director of International Student and Scholar Services at UAlbany.
After eating a dinner with all the trimmings, the celebration really got swinging with dancing. While many students say life in the United States is very different from the country they usually call home, the experience has been worth it.
"The people here are very welcoming, and I feel at home here," says Su.
"For the first time in my life, I am facing a culture barrier," says Bikmukhametov. "Sometimes it can be hard, but I'm trying to work on it. What I learned is, smiling helps."
Many of the students say they will continue their Thanksgiving celebrations with the host families they are staying with, to round out the holiday.
