Dutchess County, N.Y.--Capsized Sailboaters Rescued from Hudson River

A 911 call came in at around 3:15 P.M. Friday for a vessel in distress on the Hudson River, according to Dutchess County Deputy Sheriff T.J. Hanlon.

Simon Strauss, age 54 of Shokan, NY, his 14 year old daughter, and her 13 year old friend were sailing south on the Hudson near the town of Rhinecliff just south of the Kingston Bridge.

When they tried to return north the boat took on water and eventually capsized due to extremely choppy conditions, according to Hanon.

The sail boaters bailed and floated south eventually landing about ½ mile south of Poet's Walk in Red Hook, NY.

The area where they landed was rugged, and was difficult to reach except by an unimproved trail. The boaters were uninjured, but were treated for hypothermia at Northern Dutchess Hospital.

Members of the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office responded. Northern Dutchess Paramedics, the Rhinecliff Fire Department, New York State Police, and the Ulster County Sheriff's Office Marine Division assisted.
