More than a dozen horses have been seized from a Rensselaer County stable.
17 horses were taken Wednesday from Black River Stable in Cherry Plain. The head of the Mohawk and Hudson River Humane Society says the animals are malnourished and neglected, even though the society worked with the stable owners for more than a year to improve the horses' health. The horses are now in temporary homes; four of them at the Easy Street Rescue in Amsterdam.
"I hope they're back to normal and have a new life with a new home," says Nina Bellinger, with Easy Street Horse Rescue. "We try to adopt out our horses, we don't keep them here to retire unless they have to."
The animals will be de-wormed and quarantined for three weeks, so they do not spread any disease. They will also have visits by a vet and farrier, who will shave their hooves. The horses are expected to gain hundreds of pounds each in the next few months.
