Body Found on Banks of the Hudson, Troy Police on Case

Updated:

A disturbing discovery happened in Troy this Saturday afternoon, when a man and his dog stumbled upon a body on the banks of the Hudson River. By Saturday night, Troy police said that their investigation could be a homicide.

The man found the body just after 3:30 this afternoon. Police say it was where Madison Street meets the River that the discovery was made.

Although police have not confirmed the identity of the person found, they say they are following a number of promising leads.

NEWS10's Jeff Stoecker shows why police believe they'll be able to solve this case, and fast.

Andrew Kasius and his dog, Cedar, were out for an ordinary walk when they came across something very unordinary on the shore of the Hudson River.

"I saw an arm, then a head, then a body and so I ran back to my house and made a phone call," Kasius said.

Around 3:30, Troy police began the task of removing a body from the water.

They say it's the body of a male, and not confirming much else. While the body was significantly decomposed, police believe it is still in tact enough for a full and thorough autopsy.

"The decomposition has been held to a minimum based on the cold water temperature and the medical examiner should have lots of evidence to work with," said Troy police Captain John Cooney.

Troy police tell NEWS10 this very likely could become a homicide investigation. Sources told us the body was tied to and weighted down by cement blocks.

Saturday night, police were working to identify the victim, a process that may be helped by items found on the body.

"Clothing, things like jewelry belts, et cetera," Cooney continued, "that are distinctive on this body so we will be able to look into any missing person reports or obviously recent cases from other jurisdictions that are of concern to us,"

Two missing persons police have ruled out: 12-year-old Jaliek Rainwalker, missing since November of last year, and 21-year-old Josuha Szostak, who hasn't been seen since before Christmas after a night out in Albany.

Troy police are looking at their own missing person reports, among them is 22-year-old Shelton Shawn Grant, who was last seen in November.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday morning.
