Family marks two year anniversary of Jaliek Rainwalker's disappearance

Posted:

Greenwich, N.Y. -- November 1st marks the two year anniversary of the disappearance of a Washington County boy. Jaliek Rainwalker's adoptive father, Steve Kerr, has long been a person of interest in the case. Sunday night Jaliek's loved ones held a candlelight vigil at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenwich. News 10's Marie Luby explains why this past week has been particularly emotional for Jaliek's family.

Jaliek would be 14 years old now, two years since his disappearance. Sunday's vigil is a celebration of his life, and his family's plea for answers.

A voice inside the church is heard singing, "I know I'm who I am today because I knew you."

They cry for a boy who loved to laugh, who never held a grudge.

Dennis Smith, Jaliek's adoptive grandfather, says, "He deserved a chance to be here, and he's not." Smith continues, "This time of year we could have been watching the World Series together and talking about curve balls and fast balls."

Instead they're still asking, "What happened to Jaliek?" The news of a young person's bones found just days ago in Greenfield had Jaliek's family holding their breath. The remains turned out to be those of 18-year-old Jennifer Hammond, missing for six years.

Joy Purdy, Jaliek's former foster mother, says, "I was relieved that it wasn't him, but I was resigned to the fact that it might be two more years before we know what happened."

They felt mixed emotions -- grief for Hammond's family but also a glimmer of hope, that one day someone will find Jaliek.

"If it takes six years for us, we're in it for the wait, and it's strengthened our resolve," says Smith.

They find strength inside the church too, in the voices resonating hope that answers will come.

"Memorize his face on the news tonight and keep your eye open," says Purdy.
