The Snowstorm Hit Hard, But Local Crews Hit Just as Quick

Despite yesterday's snow fall, driving conditions were a bit smoother this morning.

This is because crews all around the Capital Region spent the night plowing and salting area roads. And while the streets in some of the major cities appear to be clear this morning, it was a whole different story up to the north of Albany.

As NEWS10's Eric Egan reports, one Capital Region community is digging out from close to a foot of snow.

By the looks of one empty lot in Glens Falls, the clean-up effort was well underway through the night. The bare lot is part of the city's Department of Public Works, where there would usually be around a dozen plow trucks parked; on Tuesday night, however, it was completely empty as all their trucks were out on the streets.

According to workers, the city trucks were up and out around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.

With a little cooperation from Mother Nature the snow lightened up overnight, giving crews a chance to clear the main drags; but the snow was not moving as easy as they may have wanted.

"We had wet snow earlier, and the wet snow is a lot heavier to push," said Don Billington of the Glens Falls D.P.W.

Still, they were able to dig-out downtown Glens Falls like they always do. However, plow drivers admitted the heavy snow did take a bit of a toll on their trucks.

"It just makes the truck work harder," Billington continued, "It's slippery,"

With this being a wet and heavy snowfall, with plenty of it, of course, crew members tell NEWS10 that a job like this could take as many as 12 hours or maybe more.

Billington says it best, with, "We're here till we're done,"

The smaller task, but perhaps just as grueling, was the job other workers were forced to do by hand; shoveling.

Crews from North Country Snow and Ice Management are in charge of clearing out commercial lots across the Capital Region, work they say has kept them plenty busy

One worker was quoted as saying, "We got a lot of jobs going on, but snow is pretty heavy,"

Another worker echoed that statement with, "It's heavy, and it's starting to take a toll on your back. [I'm] tired of it,"

In all, plowing and the shoveling was the name of the game overnight; just your standard procedure in Glens Falls following a major snowstorm.
